This dress. Right?

 

 

Here’s what happened when I saw this dress.

 

 

I immediately thought, “I must have this dress. I don’t care how much it costs and I don’t care about any other conceivable reason for me not to have it. I must have this dress because it fills a hole deep inside my sartorial soul.”

 

 

This is the dress I couldn’t have in 1992. For any number of reasons. Mostly that the money needed to buy said dress was not ready available to a 10 year old back then. (Don’t even get me started on how the disposable income of tweens and teens has skewed the fashion you find in stores these days. And as a further aside – how ridiculous is it that tweens even have disposable income. Or rather, enough to buy too short shorts and bandeaus with. You should have exactly $2 that you earned from washing the family car and that money should be spent on red Wizz Fizz and Moon Pies.)

 

 

Now that I have this dress I feel a sense of peace that previously eluded me.

 

 

What I need next is a white, crochet singlet to go over my one piece bathing suit that I wore instead of a bodysuit because bodysuits were a little too racy for my 10 year old sensibilities. And that was my own judgement call. And not just judgement call but also resourcefulness. Other girls were upset when they asked their parents to buy them a bodysuit and were told in no uncertain terms, “Uh. No. You’re ten.” Why didn’t they realise it was essentially a bathing suit with snaps? Clearly I was ahead of the curve.

 

 

I also need some (respectable) denim shorts to go with my white, crochet singlet and bathing suit but we all know my thoughts on the denim debacle, right?

 

 

Oh, another thing my 10 year old self couldn’t afford? Beer. Good thing that. I might have lost the brain cells I was using to transform bathing suits into bodysuits.
